Exploring the Flavours of Cape Town

The magnificent journey of starting a food tour!

You might be wondering, what on Earth is a food tour? Typically, a food tour is a walking tour which immerses guests into the food, drink and culture of a specific area, which is – in our opinion – the best way to learn about a city and the cultures within it.

As Cape Town Culinary Tours celebrates its second birthday, we reflect on the path we took to create the company we have today. In May of 2017, a small team of culinary enthusiasts set our sites on creating an experience which would afford guests the opportunity to explore quintessential Capetonian flavours. We took inspiration from the Latin word “culina” (meaning kitchen) and decided we wanted guests to journey through the kitchens of the restaurants that are frequented by locals, tasting specially prepared dishes along the way. With this idea in mind, we launched the pride and joy of Cape Town Culinary Tours, The Cape Town Essentials Tour.

From the borders of Bo-Kaap, – the historical center of Cape Town’s Cape Malay culture – through to the magnificence of the V&A Waterfront; the Essentials Tour emphasises what local city dwellers get when they feel the need for some well-deserved food and drink. The tour is lead by an expert guide, providing guests with the perfect balance of food, culture and history, ensuring guests leave with a world of knowledge as well as a full stomach.

After the success of the Essentials Tour (600+ happy guests), the team turned our attention to the Central Business District (CBD) of Cape Town, which offers not only local cuisine but foods from all over Africa. With so much more for the team to showcase we were determined to launch another tour. An endeavour which took months to create, as the restaurants visited on our tours are not “just another stop”, but partners who we have teamed up with to ensure that the most authentic and mouth-wateringly delicious experience is offered to our guests.

The team journeyed through the city streets, digging through the back stories of restaurant owners, sharing in their food passions and investigating the culture and historical significance behind the food and drink they have dedicated themselves to bringing to Cape Town. One of the goals for our greater African experience was that our guests would be able to take away learnings which they could share with others, and in that spirit were delighted to launch our latest tour named The Cape Town Safari Tour, for “safari” is a Swahili word meaning journey.

Navigating through the city streets of the CBD, this tour focusses on African tastes and traditions which have ventured all the way to our city’s center, as well as some local favourites that have stood the test of time. The Safari Tour is filled with food and drink tastings of flavours and fragrances that will blow your mind! It is recommended that you come hungry as you will leave feeling “stuffed” by the end of this tour.
